Although cream and magnolia walls give off a clean atmosphere and make a room appear lighter and larger, let's be truthful, they're quite boring - especially if you don't have the right accessories to help liven the living room. If you haven't already seen our guide -
Spice Up Your Life
then take a look for a little inspiration, but if you are keen to keep the walls the same colour, there are alternative ways to lift your lounge with a boost of personal touches.
There are a few routes you can take - all depend on your taste and your budget.
Curtains help create warmth and can be one of the focal points in a room. The fashion seems to be long, down to the floor curtains however this only works well in certain rooms. If you have a radiator under the window, it would be more energy efficient to use shorter curtains. Try to use warm colours to fill the room with personality. Stripes are high in priority at the moment and creams, browns and reds can add warmth and give the room more texture without being overpowering.
Blinds work very well for those who do not have much space. They are available in different material (fabric, wooden, metal) and available in different colours and styles. Blinds are simple to use and are easy to maintain and clean.
Cushions are a great accessory that add comfort and colour. Either match or co-ordinate with curtains or blinds. Many shops have co-ordinated sets available to make life easier.
Pictures and decorative bowls or vases are a great way to fill empty spaces or walls, but don't make the room look cluttered!
Rugs help give the room more texture and can help lock in the warmth if you have tiled or wooden flooring.
Furniture is the key. Different styles of furniture create a differing atmosphere. If you already have a complete sofa set, then perhaps think about having a coffee table, console cabinets or a beautiful storage cabinet for your dvds, books and videos. This can help to give an added touch of comfort and more space for your coffee cups!
Light is an important asset to be used to its fullest potential. Good lighting can make your room feel spacious, clean and welcoming. Natural light is a positive feature however the quality of the light depends on where the room faces and what time of year it is. This therefore means you'll need to have 'ambient' lighting to lift the room up. This can be done through spot lights, central lights, uplighters, downlighters and table lamps.
